Artist Statement

I get inspired by everyday objects around me. The things I see when I pass them in daily life. -Architecture, roads, construction. If I see something that inspires me, it will cause me to investigate and shape whatever medium I need to reproduce it and use it in my work. My goal is to use these aesthetics’ to create an object with a bit of mystery and sense of antiquity, but in a modern way. My joy comes from investigating new techniques and inventing new ways of controlling the chaos.

Reflecting on the work

Of course, all Artists project a good bit of themselves into their work. I do this as well, but I really enjoy hearing what others see in my work and what it means to them. I am not the Artist who presents work and says, "See what I did", rather, I am the type that says, "What do you think about this?"

To me, Art reflects who you are. If an Artist is Chaotic, it is reflected in their work. If they like Order and structure, then you will see that.  If you are Academic, or have a whimsical nature, those things will be reflected in the work as well. So who am I then?  I am simple, creative and organic. I look to the things from my past, and the places I have been. All the years of work and all the artistic and woodcraft skills I now posses and I see it in my Art, all the time. My Art is a reflection of me.

One Last thing

It was my Grandmothers passion for art that started my whole journey in life. She was a school teacher in Oklahoma all her life. When she retired, she took up oil painting. Many would call this "little old lady paintings". However, she was not average. My Art Mentor of 30 plus years, Jim Charles, who was an Artist and Educator in Dallas, often agreed when I showed her work to him.  After she passed away, and after speaking to many people who came to her funeral. I realized that she had painted an astonishing amount of work. Everyone I bumped into would happily tell you what painting of hers they had. She hadn't even started painting until she was 65 years old. For me, when I think about her starting so late in life and the fact that I haven't even reached that age, makes me think about how much more painting I have ahead of me.
