A few weeks back I entered a couple of pieces into the Irving Arts Center, Members show. I did this as a kind of mental kicking off point for what hopes to be a very busy run on producing more work and the start of my new ventures in marketing.
As a child, my sisters and I took lessons from an Art Instructor that was located in the same block as where the Irving Arts Center now stands. The buildings are still there but all the old shops that used to be there are long since gone. "Mrs. Franks", as we all knew her by, used to run a very humble Art supply store in one of those shops and if you walked all the way to the very back of the store, you would find a classroom set up for teaching students. I was in the 5th grade, so my memories are very limited, but I still remember where my sisters and I each sat and what paintings we were working on. At some point she closed the Art store but continued to teach her students out of her home just a few blocks away. I was there every Tuesday night with "the group" where we all copied from Art books and listened to a popular Radio station "KVIL". (Easy listening sounds of the 70's). These were my first lessons in oil painting.
The Irving Arts Center, even though it came much later in my life also holds a special place in my heart. I started showing there in 2003 or 2004 in the members shows and have really great memories on top of even older ones. Even though I have never stopped producing and selling paintings over the last 10 years, I am now in a better situation than I have been in a while I feel renewed with the possibilities of where my Art can take me. With that new mind set I felt the need to touch base with my roots, so I entered the annual show. I attended the reception with my Mentor and Friend, re-living some of the memories that had been made and to my surprise; I was awarded an Honorable mention as a part of the Juried competition. That......was very cool.
I wanted to share the memory with all of you here, and if you want to see some great Art at an awesome venue, go down to the Irving Arts Center and check it out. The members show is still running thru September 16th. -Steve G
